35 conversation starters for your small group

One of the core skills of a good small group leader is the ability to facilitate deeper relationships. Deeper relationships don’t accidentally happen, they typically begin with conversations and most conversations don’t begin deep. Leaders must learn to initiate conversation and some time getting conversations started can be tricky.

Following are what we call “trigger questions” and they’re designed to activate and aid connecting conversations. We hope they’ll be as helpful to you as they are to us!

THREE quick tips:
1. You’ve got to practice before you’ll become comfortable. The more you’re around teenagers, the more comfortable you’ll become and the more natural your conversations will be. There’s no replacement for repetition.

2. If you ask a question that can be easily answered with a single word (yes/no, “green”), follow it up with another question that requires more than a one word answer.

3. Don’t fire all these questions like they’re being shot from a machine gun, instead ask one and allow the conversation to flow naturally.
