FAQ/Rebuilding Your Team: A Response

The first article addressed the frequently asked question about tips for maintaining your ministry for the long run when just starting out. The article addressed the need to have a team of friends to do ministry with, and when you see them as your friends you feel encouraged and as though you are not alone in the journey.

For me one of the best things that I was encouraged to do when I first started out was to take a day off. I know that may seem a bit obvious, but you will soon find out that ministry never ends. There is always a game to go see, students to take out for bit to eat, and an event to plan, however if you fall into the habit of working non-stop from the start there will be an expectation that you don’t need off time which in turn will lead to burn out!

Establish your day off schedule from the start, let your students, parents, and the church body as a whole know that is your day off, then shut off your phone, turn off your computer, and take a day away from the office. It will benefit you in the long run to have that time off to be refreshed, to spend time with your family and just to have a break, remember even God rested!

The rebuilding your leadership team article started with an excellent reminder that we have a choice about how we are going to handle change in ministry. I love that Josh and Kurt started by saying you can either wallow in sadness over the loss of your old team or you can take on the challenge and see your new team as a new opportunity to minister to a new group of students.

One of the most important tips that they shared was to not compare your team to the teams of the past. That is a huge challenge especially when you consider the team you serve with to be your friends as they mentioned in the first article. There may even be a sense of loss and frustration when you have a transition of team members.

I see this as a time to claim the verse – we are a new creation, the old has gone the new has come. It applies perfectly to the new team that you will be training and God will be using to do a mighty work with the students involved in your group. Claim it for your ministry and be prepared for God to do a great work with your new team.
