General Ministry

From time to time I post a question that comes into the blog for YOU to answer. What advice would you give this youth pastor who is asking about violence and accidents that happen during youth group. Was hoping you could share your thoughts in the comments, too. Weigh in!

How have you dealt with violence that happens on your watch?  Students fighting, horseplay getting out of hand, etc? I’ve had a few incidents over the years and each time I wonder if there was some systematic problem with our setup that should have prevented it or if this is just something that happens every blue moon and you have to deal with them individually. Help!

We run a pretty rough outreach ministry on Wednesday nights. Here’s my take:

    1. Fights are usually something that are built toward, not things that happen spontaneously. Be aware of what’s going on and try to head them off before they escalate too much.

    2. Break it up and get some back up to help you break it up.

    3. Call parents to come pick up students immediately.

    4. Separate the students into different rooms with an adult to talk to them while you wait for parents to arrive. (This is some of the absolute BEST ministry time that I have ever had.)
