From time to time I post a question that comes into the blog for YOU to answer. What advice would you give this youth pastor who is asking about having a formal invitation at youth group. Help them out in the comments!
I have a question for you: we’re revamping our youth ministry altar call and wanted to know a couple of things about what you guys do: do you have an actual invitation? If so, when there’s an altar call and youth come up, what do you give them to follow-up … if anything? Do you have a discipleship program that takes them from there?

Your turn … weigh in!

Who do you make pay for the background check? The church or the applicant?

I think an invitation in some form is a MUST. How can you proclaim God’s Word and NOT give them a chance to respond? Depending on the nature of your message, maybe a salvation prayer, but always an invitation to pray and confess. If it’s a sermon/lecture type atmosphere, we play soft music and have leaders available to pray with them. If it’s a small group study format, I usually have a quite few moments for reflection and offer myself and the others leaders up if they want to talk afterwards.

We haven’t gotten into connection cards, but we aren’t against them. Normally we are small enough to get the individuals information by jotting it down. Hopefully we’ll get so big that we have to have a card of some sort to keep up with all the decisions and transformations!

And of course we always encourage them to follow their decisions with leader conversations and by coming to upcoming studies and functions. I have been thinking of developing a handout for new Christians with some steps for growing in their new relationship with God.
