This week, we are taking a look at what we’ve learned about making a healthy transition into a new ministry. Today we’ll hit two more thoughts, and then finish up tomorrow.

FOCUS ON THE BIG PICTURE
Transition is overwhelming and it’s human nature to be eager to settle into some kind of regular routine. The key is to get into a groove without getting stuck in the rut. While learning how to get each week’s worth of stuff done, keep an eye on the big picture.

One of the ways I (Matt) am doing this now (remember yesterday we mentioned that Matt is in a new church) is by creating specific goals for the next 100 days. I’m only a few months into this new transition and I’ve revised my goals three times. Each time it’s helped me keep the broader perspective that’s needed to lead effectively.

FILTER OUT THE NOISE
The students in your ministry have parents (DUH), and those parents are often hurting, discouraged, and desperate. Desperation gives people a loud voice and can drive them to do crazy things. For example, one of your parents might offer to put together a petition (for their desired change) and give it to the senior pastor and elders (true story). While it’s important to absorb as much as possible about your new ministry context, it’s also important to remember that your ministry isn’t a democracy. A leader needs to listen well, but there comes a time when the noise must be filtered out.
