General Ministry

One of the questions of interest that comes up pretty often when youth workers visit our high school ministry is what songs we are currently playing/singing in youth group. Taffy (aka Student Ministry Worship Guy, aka Rice and Worship) sent me the most recently Top 10 we’re enjoying right now:

1) What Would I Have Done (Bethal Live)
2) All I am (Phil Wickham)
3) Christ in Me (Written by Tim Timmons) Free Download on www.clusterofstudents.com
4) Overcome/Blessed Assurance (Desperation Band)
5) He is Alive (COS) Free Download on www.clusterofstudents.com
6) Here for You (Matt Redman)
7) 10,000 Reasons (Matt Redman)
8) Like and Avalanche (Hillsong United)
9) God above all (Hillsong Youth)
9) LIft Him up (COS)
10) Learn to Love (COS)

Just out of curiosity how did they come up with the top ten? Did they ask your students? Is it based solely off of students responses to songs?

Thanks for the list! Sent it over to my worship team as well.

      hi Barry!

I have been serving in youth ministry for about 8 years now, no where a veteran but I have some experience. In that time I have also done a lot of worship leading. There are a lot of great worship aids out there, depending on your needs. So let’s start with your needs!

If you got a musicians available, then you are pretty set, you just need a way to teach the songs to the musicians. This is a pretty easy solution. The way I learn songs is by watching youtube videos of other people, my favorite being Brian Wahl, here is his youtube channel…

The one problem with this channel is it, as far as I know, only teaches you acoustic guitar. Which for me personal is great because that is what I primarily play. Yet if you are looking for a set of instructions for acoustic guitar, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass, piano, drums and voice, then watching multiple youtube channels can get you in trouble fast. Different players play songs differently, in different keys and that can really be frustrating.

So if you have a full band that you need to teach songs to and you don’t have time to have an extended rehearsal, I would recommend this sight, http://worshipteam.tv. They put together all the different parts of the song (acoustic guitar, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass, drums, piano and all four voice parts) so if you have to learn the songs away from each other, you can come together and learn them relatively quickly.

Now, if you don’t have musicians, you can play worship videos. There is a product called iWorship (http://www.iworshipnow.com/) and it contains everything you need. The powerpoint slides, the backgrounds and most importantly the CCLI rights to use the recorded song. They are a little pricey, about 10 dollars per video but you get a break if you buy a bundle.

      Hope this helps!
