General Ministry
Josh Griffin

OK … here’s the deal. I need to take my health more seriously! My son (9 years old) recently read a recent guest post on the site called The Youth Pastor Diet and said he wanted to become a youth pastor so he could only eat junk food like dad. After laughing and telling him “no” I realized I need to make a change.

Maybe you do, too: this picture of the Youth Pastor Diet from Group Magazine a few months back isn’t too far off from my actual diet.

So tomorrow that all changes. I picked up the domain name YouthPastorDiet.com and am going to challenge you to a Weight Loss War from December 1, 2012 until the Simply Youth Ministry Conference (March 1, 2013). Lots to play for – here’s the scoop:

Invite teenagers into an epic adventure with Jesus. Check out Pierced: The New Testament today!
  • Become a member on WeightLossWars.com ($10 – goes to them)
  • Join the Youth Pastor Diet Competition ($20 – pooled together for the Top 3 losers)
  • Lose weight! Anything short of medical procedures goes
  • Track your progress weekly on the site
  • Most lbs down wins (there isn’t an option for percentage, sorry)
  • HUGE prize announcements Monday morning

So you basically have to put up $30 to get in – but it could change your life. Who’s in?

How service-minded are your teenagers? Take this short quiz to find out!

  • Frank Gil says:

I really am considering this. Great idea!

  • Duane Cooper says:

I must say as a youth minister I finally made 2012 the year I made my “last stand” using a medically supervised liquid diet I have lost 230 pounds (that is not a misprint!) I have never felt better or had more energy! It was the best ministry decision I ever made.

  • Tom Shriver says:

I’m in – this may just be the motivation I need to reach my goals. Great idea, Josh. And Frank – get in on this!

  • Jimmy Leasure says:

I’m in! Can we track this weekly to see who’s in first and where we stand?

  • JG says:

Yup – it has automatic leaderboards and the whole thing! Jump in! JG

  • AC says:

Yo, how about some before and after pics!!!

  • Tom Shriver says:

I’ll post one, AC. I will be in my speedo so you get the full effect 😉

  • Aaron Helman says:

Now I just need to figure out how to invite a few friends without offending them. 🙂

  • Kyle Corbin says:

I’m in! Super glad that your son reading the article was a good opportunity to reflect. I am already down a bunch of weight towards my goal weight, but still want to participate to encourage others. (hey another $20 virtually free up for grabs).

Lets do this! Invite everyone and hopefully they will take on the challenge. Wouldn’t it be inspiring if tons (pun intended) of youth workers got together and showed that we can change ministry culture.

  • Neb Milbourn says:

I’m having my In-Laws bring me a gallon of water from India when they return. Last time I was there and and had a sip of the water before I realized it wasn’t bottled water, I lost ten pounds in 48 hours. Of course my eyes turned yellow, and I had to have my liver tested when I got home, but ten pounds!!!

  • Randy Moore says:

I am trying to register on the link but it isn’t working any help? Keeps telling me that verifying my email has failed.

  • Just signed up – I love it. : ) Nothing like some healthy competition to get me focused!

  • […] I posted about my latest crazy idea late last week and the thing has taken off! It is a 90-day chall…, and uses the Weight Loss Wars platform to guide the group with leaderboards, profiles and graphs. I’d still like another few people to join us to push the prize purse over $1,000 – right now it sits at $720 for the person who loses the most weight. I’m fat. Why is that? The scientific answer is that you eat too many Doritos Tacos at Taco Bell and wash it down with gargantuan handfuls of Cinnamon Twists and Mt. Dew. Actually this is just a guess, but probably not that far off. […]
