Great leaders have clear and compelling expectations for the people they are leading. Here are some reasons why good expectations make a positive impact and increase a leader’s influence.

EXPECTATIONS CREATE UNITY

A team of leaders can’t be on the same page if they don’t know what page to turn to. Clear expectations let everyone know where to go and how to get there. For any given program, special event, retreat, etc… your leaders will have to make dozens (maybe hundreds) of decisions about what they say and do. A leader’s expectations impart values that can be applied to different situations as they minister to students and their families.

A unified approach within youth ministry will make the team of leaders more effective. Unity also keeps a team encouraged, giving everyone a sense of “we’re in this together.” Youth ministry can be difficult, and when it is, it’s nice to know you’re not all alone!

EXPECTATIONS SET THE STAGE FOR SYNERGY

When a team shares the same expectations they can help one another.

For sake of illustration, let’s say you have an all-night event, and you tell the leaders on your team that your expectation is that no student would go home without being engaged in a meaningful conversation by at least one adult. Later that night, a few of your leaders are hanging-out together and one of them says, “Hey, let’s talk later because we’re supposed to be engaging students and I know there’s some kids here who haven’t had a meaning conversation yet.”

That particular leader isn’t imposing his or her own ideas and/or agenda on the group, they are simply reminding everyone of what has already been previously stated and expected. That scenario won’t happen unless expectations are clearly communicated.

EXPECTATIONS MOVE A MINISTRY FORWARD

Here’s another way to look at clear and compelling expectations: they paint a picture of what success looks like. Everyone wants to be successful! No one wakes up in the morning hoping their life is powerless and void of impact. Your leaders are showing up ready to make a difference in the lives of teenagers for the glory of God’s Kingdom. Help them win! Tell them how to be successful with their time and energy. Everyone needs a roadmap and you’re the one who knows the end destination and can clearly define the route.

What “win” have you seen in your ministry that has come from setting up your leaders with clear expectations?
