Recently, I’ve had to dive headlong into uncomfortable. Mostly, it feels like a head-first plunge off the high dive into an empty pool. Scratch that—fill the pool with razor blades and alcohol. Yeah…that’s better.
I didn’t realize the lullaby of the familiar had sung me to sleep. It was subtle. And so peaceful. I apparently embraced it without even realizing.
As I happily dozed, someone blew an air horn in my ear. Picture an America’s Funniest Home Videos finalist here. I was nestled in quiet slumber when that annoying (and loud) blast came from nowhere.
After the initial startle of being jolted awake, people on AFV respond in four ways, usually.
1) FURY. They react. They’re FURIOUS! They do NOT appreciate the jolt. They did NOT want to be awakened. They HATED the embarrassment of being caught off guard in front of everyone. Have you ever shaken your fists at God and demanded answers? Have you ever snarled and growled as He brought you out of your comfort zone?
2) CONFUSION. They rub their eyes—confused about where they are and what just happened? They look inquisitively at the offender and wonder who they even are. Have you ever been so confused by the moving Hand of God that you had a hard time recognizing His will & direction?
3) APATHY. They stare momentarily in the direction of the noise…and then they roll over and go back to sleep. They could care less and they can sleep through anything. Have you ever ignored the thunderous roar of an obvious direction God has given you?
4) LAUGHTER. They embrace the moment. They laugh. They live in the humor of the joke on them. Have you ever run head-long into the arms and plan of Jesus, even though it was unclear?
God sends a jolt our way, and we have the opportunity to respond in a few different ways….much like those familiar responses caught on AFV.
How are you responding to God’s call on your life? Are you kicking and screaming and cursing Him in your head? Are you dazed and confused and wondering Who is even talking to you? Do you even care? Or are you rolling over in your bed, covering your head with the sheets and falling back asleep?
Or are you laughing as you embrace the practical joke – the divine humor that only God has – as He calls you into a life of the unfamiliar, uncomfortable, and holy…..
