EVERYTHING IN YOUTH MINISTRY STARTS HERE

Kurt and Josh, as usual, brought us great insight this week reminding us to build into several key relationships. No doubt we could all do better at building up at least one of the areas they suggested. Those being the Senior Pastor, those that served before you, volunteers and parents. Often when reading something regarding youth ministry I start to ponder things through my “small church” filter. With the “small church” in mind allow me to offer a couple other relationships that can be vital to you and the youth ministry.

Chairmen of the committees
In our church the Youth Pastor also serves as the CE (Christian Education) Chairman, and our committee chairs meet quarterly at our Church Council meeting. This opportunity serves as a great time to promote, and educate the decision makers about what’s happening in youth ministry. I always share a brief written summary of what is coming up in CE department whether its promotion Sunday, VBS, or Easter/Christmas youth programs, etc. I also include what is coming up in youth ministry and use the opportunity to ask questions or express needs. The written summary helps me appear organized, even when I’m not – personal struggle for me. Also, how often do you get the audience of all those people at the same time? I often hear from other youth pastors the frustration they have with the lack of knowledge the church has about their youth ministry. If you have something similar to this avenue in your church, use it to inform others of the great things happening in the youth ministry.

Custodians
Seriously, how often have you heard something about the latest youth event causing extra work for the custodians? Sometimes just using the church with middle school students creates a “mystery stain” that can’t be avoided. Let me suggest that you try looking at things from their point of view as you plan your next crazy (messy) stunt. Is it possible to play bobbing for Skittles in chocolate pudding outside, instead of the gym? Also, consider using the unlimited energy your students have to stack chairs, & move tables to make life easier for the custodians. We all know how fast negativity spreads through the church, but if just a little extra planning on our part can avoid it, then it is worth it. OK, confession time – currently, my wife serves as the custodian at our church, but it hasn’t always been that way.

What are some relationships that you consider essential?
