Let me just say, I agreed to write the response to these articles before I knew we were playing True Confessions of Derelict Youth Pastors! How on earth am I supposed to limit my ministry blunders to just three?!

PARENT COMMUNICATION
Parents don’t always hear what we’re saying…especially if we aren’t saying it to them. Giving information to students and expecting it to get to mom and dad is like playing a risky game of telephone. You never know what’s gonna come out at the end of the line. So OVER-communicate in multiple ways. Texting, Facebook, e-mail, paper newsletters, parent meetings, and hallway conversations are all essential and work in tandem to keep our reputations solid and our parents happy. (And remember, if you ever schedule a retreat for guys where they’ll be boxing, please communicate it clearly with parents before they see photos of bloodied noses, black eyes, and fattened lips showing up on Facebook….not that that’s ever happened….I’m just sayin’.) Better yet – don’t ever plan a retreat like that.

PASTOR COMMUNICATION
Having recently served in a lead pastoral capacity, I now understand why my pastor never remembers anything I say to him. I have newfound respect for the big chair – and those who occupy it. There are a lot of people, personalities, and programs to keep track of. So OVER-communicate in multiple ways. As far as it depends on you, make sure the lead pastor knows about potential problems before he gets ‘one of those phone calls.’ Fill out all the paperwork necessary to communicate calendar needs…even if you have told him about the event 72 times. Follow up important conversations with an e-mail reminder. Spend time talking to him about him – not just about you. (And if you ever have students who get lost overnight in the mountains of New Mexico, make sure you call the pastor no matter how late it is….not that that’s ever happened….I’m just sayin’.) Better yet – call Emergency Management Services first.

JESUS COMMUNICATION
This probably won’t be a news flash to most of you, but Jesus is not the commodity we peddle to potential investors. But even celebrity spokespeople can grow disillusioned or bored with a product that they initially loved talking about, simply because the luster has worn off. So OVER-communicate in multiple ways. Jesus is so in love with you – that at the end of the day, He’d rather have your heart fully engaged with him than you doing the best youth ministry job ever. So spend time connecting – REALLY connecting. Private worship, occasionally attending a church other than your own, grabbing a good devotional guide, and walking in accountability with friends who are not connected to your church are all good places to start. (And if you ever find yourself having a surprise spiritual melt-down with your significant other because you don’t think Jesus has ‘paid up for your investment of obedience’, it’s time to embrace some true Sabbath….not that that’s ever happened….I’m just sayin’.) Better yet – build some regular Sabbath into every day.

Above all, remember – mistakes do not define you. They simply serve as a portion of your story. They only become the jacket-cover of your life’s novel when you clasp them to your chest and refuse to acknowledge them, learn from them, and then send them on their way.
