According to doctors, nutritionists and other people who know a lot more about the human body than I do, we should do what it takes to achieve “heart healthiness”…not sure I even know what it means, but apparently we need it!  We can engage in heart healthy activities, have heart healthy diets and, when necessary, even take medicine to help us have healthy hearts.  The physical condition of our hearts is a BIG deal and it wouldn’t be an overstatement to say it’s a matter of life or death.

I’ll bet you know where I’m going with this!

As Christian leaders, being “heart healthy” spiritually is something we all need to strive for. Very few will impact your long-term effectiveness as a youth worker more than the spiritual condition of your heart. The activities you engage in, your spiritual diet and, when necessary, some medicine are all things that can work together to help you have a “heart healthy” year in 2011.

Activities:  There are lots of “things” you can do to help build a spiritually strong heart.  I won’t list them all here, but as we head into a new year, it may be the perfect time to re-start some of your spiritual activities, disciplines and habits that you may have let slide in 2010.

Spiritual Diet: I’m going to preach to you something you have probably preached to your students dozens of times:  What you take in, has an effect on you. You are what you eat. Garbage in, Garbage out!  The start of a new year is a great time to assess your dietary habits.

Medicine: Very few people actually enjoy taking medicine…but a dose of strong medicine often does exactly what it’s supposed to do: Bring about quick results.  Likewise, very few people enjoy being held accountable, being confronted when we’ve sinned etc. But the pursuit of heart healthiness will require being the recipient of this kind of spiritual medicine from time to time.  If you don’t have people in your life who you trust to give you an occasional dose, I urge you to make that a goal in this new year.

Here’s wishing you a physically and spiritually healthy heart in 2011!
