If you’ve read much, talked much or listened much about youth ministry lately, you are certainly aware of the growing concern over the vast number of students who walk away from church during, or shortly after, their high school years.Without a strategic transition plan, youth groups set themselves up to loose students before they even enter the high school program. And, in my opinion, a rough transition may contribute to students never feeling truly connected to the high school group which makes it easier to walk away later on (I have absolutely no hard data to back that up….it’s just a ‘gut feeling’. Like I said, people way smarter than me can try to figure it out!). So, with your 8th graders only a few weeks away from moving into high school, I’d like to offer a two-step strategy to help the transition go as smoothly as possible. My strategy: Reach down and Push up.
At the Orange Conference a few weeks ago a Family Ministry forum got onto this topic. One of the great nuggets that they made mention of was that for every transition there needs to be some element that students can look forward to and get excited about. Their example was for the transition from 3-5 grade ministry into Middle School Ministry. For their church they decided as a team that they would not have live worship music in their service until Middle School. All the 3-5 graders looked forward to the time when there was a real band that they could worship with. That exciting piece helped the transition between those two classes. So what does your transition look like? Is there always something that the students deem important for them to look forward to?

OffensiveOne of the things we do every year is an 8th Grade Retreat. We take them away for about 24 hours to try and help with the transition. We use hs juniors and hs small group leaders as chaperones on the trip to help bridge the gap. Here is a breakdown of the weekend: Saturday noonish- feed them pizza and play some games; Satuday afternoon- take them to a mall in a nearby town, let them have some free time, and then play a scavenger hunt in the mall; Saturday evening- out to dinner and a movie; Satuday late evening- swimming in the hotel pool, and then to their rooms; Somewhere in there- we gather them up and the hs guy gives them a challenge, and then we let them pick the brains of the juniors. Sunday morning- we get them back to church on time for the hs service.
