I have a confession to make that may surprise you. I have a serious problem with the doctrine of hell. It’s hard to imagine a loving God that would create an eternal place of suffering for sinners.I have a serious problem with the doctrine of hell. It’s hard to imagine a loving God that would create an eternal place of suffering for sinners. Don’t get me wrong, I think that sinners should suffer some. But an eternity of agony in “fire and brimstone” for all those who happen not to be Christians? Come on!
My God Man....you just helped me in a way that I cannot explain. I am a youth pastor at a small church and at our last youth service we had some who had very real issues about hell and one said he had been talking with some friends at school who were into the this new age movement and it sounded like it was ok and that if he died he was just "gone like a vapor, like the bible says" and that there was no such thing as hell. I have been looking through scripture and for some helps this week and ran across your lesson here. It is just what I needed to help me tonight and I thank God he allowed me to find it. I must admit it is a good thing you put the warning at the top because I would not have finished reading your lesson if you had not. I to have struggled with a way to show the love and mercy of God but to also show the reason for God creating hell and that it was not ever intended for man, but that is a literal place of actual torment forever. In this day and age with the main focus being on God's love and mercy this is one topic that MANY are troubled with. Thank you and may God truly Bless you. JC Adams

OffensiveHey Lance, please understand that the god of Islam, Allah, is NOT Yahweh. Can't be. If you've ever read the Koran, it is not a book of peace no matter what anyone says to the contrary. And Jesus said no one gets to God without going through him first. Muslims do not believe Jesus is God's son, but rather a good prophet. Rejecting Jesus is to reject God. How can Islam declare war on Christianity and still claim ownership to Yahweh? A house divided against itself cannot stand (seems like I read that somewhere).

OffensiveWe can only preach hell well if our soteriology is clear, orthodox, and sensible. "Decisional" regeneration has made salvation into a game show...do you want door number one, two, or three. If you choose incorrectly...eternal fire awaits. People can't imagine a god that operates that way because there is no god that operates that way. We have to communicate the deep, experiential, spiritual reality of salvation for it to make sense to anyone. We have to communicate that we aren't just "making the right choice," we are participating in the righteousness and reward of Christ. We become inheriters of the kingdom only because, in a mystical and spiritual way, we become participants in Christ. This is tied of course to ecclesiology (we are the Body of Christ) and then to eschatology (we recieve the reward only due to Christ). When we are lazy with our theology, we will get negative outcomes, like confusion and offense at the thought of hell. We should all be pained by hell, but it should not be difficult for us to articulate the doctrine in light of the metanarrative of Scripture.

OffensiveI've heard it said that you should never preach, speak, or teach about hell without it bringing tears to your eyes. We may not like it, and we should not like it! But as Greg shares, it is plainly and unapologetically laid out in scripture.

OffensiveA man or woman would not be going to hell because he or she is Muslim, they would be going to hell because they did not place their faith in Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior. Jesus said I am THE WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE, no man comes unto the Father but by me. Unless a person makes the decision to accept the free gift of eternal life in Christ, they will die and be eternally separated from God in a fiery hell - whether it sounds nice or not.

OffensiveHi, my name is Lance, and I am a youth ministry major. Lately this subject of Hell, and where we all go, has really been tormenting me. The truth is, I find it hard to believe that because a man or woman is Muslim he or she is going to Hell. I mean, how could God send some one to Hell when all they have done is follow him with all of their hearts? Does anyone know the answer, because I would love to hear other ideas on this subject?

OffensiveWhat a great article, I decided a few years back that I don't need to opologize for God. Some of the teachings of the scripture are offensive, such as hell, but they are essential to the faith. Proverbs 16:6 through the fear of the Lord men depart evil. What an honest article, thank you for upholding God's word and not being offended by it.
