The question “How many have you got?” is far too common among youth pastors. It’s a hard one to answer. It’s even harder to answer the question “How many student leaders do you have?”
Our ministry has recently gone through an interesting time
Last year we had very few student leaders. While it was discouraging—and sometimes very stressful—those who stuck around have come back as a real team, closer and more passionate for their calling.Don’t worry, fret, lose hair, or go gray trying to figure out how to get more student leaders.
This year, we find ourselves with tons of student leaders—which is great! The younger ones are coming up and are eager to help, while the seniors are ready to show them the way.
The question I ask today is “Does the size of the leadership team really matter?”
Yes. And no.
It matters for a two reasons:
1. Your eyes can’t be everywhere. You can’t see everything. But if you have student leaders who can keep an eye out and stop the issues before they blow up, that can make all the difference.
2. The less that you have, the more you can interact with the student leaders on a one-to-one basis. Obviously, the more you can spend one-on-one with the student leaders, the more impact you have in their lives.
It doesn’t matter for one reason:
1. We all know the Word says that God won’t give us more than we can handle. It also says that God will supply all our needs. Maybe the small number of students you have is all you need. Maybe you need to work with what you have first.
So what? Trust God with what (and who) he’s given you. Believe that the students you have helping out and learning are exactly who should be there. Don’t worry, fret, lose hair, or go gray trying to figure out how to get more student leaders. They’ll come.
Lastly: love, encourage, love, disciple, mentor, love, treat out—and did I mention love?—the Leaders you do have. That’s all they need!
