In The Day the Earth Stood Still the human race has mega-problems! The threat of destruction at the hands of an invading alien is imminent.
Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) has come to earth from far, far away and taken on the form of a human being. He's taken it upon himself to serve as judge and jury in determining whether humanity deserves a second chance to get its act together and save the planet. The verdict: Humanity is hopeless
The sentence: Extermination. The irresponsible and misguided human race needs to be taken out in an effort to save the planet itself from total destruction. Should there be a stay of execution? Still the end of the world as we know it is an intriguing topic. One that Christians and non-Christians alike sometimes ponder. And perhaps more so in these unsettling times. The real end of the world as we know it, will probably make the plotline playing out in The Day the Earth Stood Still seem as soft as a Fluffy, Puff Marshmallow. When Jesus comes again there will be serious stuff coming down...eternally serious stuff.
So whether you find yourself talking with your friends about The Day the Earth Stood Still or in a more general conversation about the unsettling times we're living in, try purposefully moving the conversation toward what the Bible has to say about the end of the world as we know it. Talk about Jesus' free gift of salvation that's available to all. Here are a few ideas to help you get started:
While the day and hour is unknown, Jesus' return someday, somehow should motivate us to tell our friends about Jesus. Are you prepared to meet Jesus face to face? Are you clinging to His promise of salvation if we trust in Him? Are you sharing that Good News with your friends who don't know Jesus?
