Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

- Proverbs 11:2

Pride is the downfall of many youth workers, and if you’re anything like us, it’s easy to spot in others and tougher to see in ourselves! Here are a few things that seem to help keep arrogance in check.

1 Don’t put your trust in numbers.
It’s easy to get prideful when the numbers are up. The numbers game leads to comparison, and when you compare…you always come up short. Either your numbers are awesome and you get prideful, or your numbers are abysmal and you feel defeated. Either way you lose.

2 It isn’t cool to brag.
Look, we know you’re excited about how many students attended your youth group this week, how many decisions were made at camp, and how many of your students signed your purity pledge, but be careful about when, and how, you share the news. Be excited about what God is doing, share it, but fight the urge to disguise spiritual pride with arrogant showmanship.

3 Bloom where you’re planted.
Some of the best advice I (Josh) was ever given (thank you HB London way back in the day) was to bloom where I was planted. Don’t always be looking for the next big thing—that moment where you’ll finally break into the worldwide youth ministry scene and be a youth ministry superstar. God has called you at your church for this moment; be focused and content on where he has placed you and serve there humbly until he shows you the next step.

4 Read scripture and pray.

For me (Kurt) there is no better antidote to pride than spending time with my Heavenly Father. Being reminded of his holiness, and “bigness” is an instant shot of reality concerning my brokenness and “smallness.” One of the marvelous mysteries of God-time is the way it simultaneously lifts us up and keeps us grounded.

There are certainly more ways to fight pride—toss up another one in the comments!
